Tour De Palm Springs Moves To Palm Desert

Posted: Updated:
Palm Desert, CA -

The Palm Desert City Council approved a measure bring the to the Tour De Palm Springs to Palm Desert Thursday.

"We were approved 5-0, unanimously, to bring the Tour De Palm Springs to Palm Desert. We're very excited. We have thousands of cyclist and thousands of families that will be coming into El Paseo in Palm Desert," said Tim Esser, founder of the Tour De Palm Springs.

The change of venue was brought on by scheduling conflicts in Palm Springs. Organizers say fewer and fewer riders were coming out for the tour because of the earlier start date.

"What happens is these big club, riders of twenty, thirty in a group, they plan their vacations around this event so it was very difficult for them with the date change. So we're going to be bringing it back to the original date, which is the middle of February," Esser said.

The event raises money for local charities in the Coachella Valley including United Cerebral Palsy and Disabled American Veterans. In the last five years, the tour has raised one point two five million dollars.

"When they are able to participate in the ride, the smiles that come on their face are just amazing. They are able to be out there with all the rest of the folks that are riding in the day, they just smile, they just start glowing," said Michael Stearns, executive director of CV Spin.

The tour has a place for every level of rider with event distances ranging from one hundred miles for the elite rider to five miles for the amateur.

"As you ride along these groups conjugate and they're all at the same place. And it's a really interesting thing to watch. People come in, these groups come in, these groups form along the way, whether you're an elite rider or you're just struggling to finish," said previous tour rider David O'donnell.
