Counterfeiting Suspect Busted After Traffic Stop on Interstate 10

Cabazon, CA -

A Desert Hot Springs man wanted for counterfeiting currency in three states was arrested on suspicion of speeding on the freeway in Cabazon while on drugs, with law enforcement also discovering counterfeit money inside his car, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Matthew Burress, 33, was stopped at 8 p.m. Sunday on eastbound Interstate 10 for driving a Toyota Camry at excessive speeds, according to CHP Officer Darren Meyer.

Meyer said Burress provided CHP with a fake name and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of methamphetamine and providing a peace officer with false information.

Further investigation into the Toyota revealed ``a large quantity of high quality counterfeit United States currency,'' along with equipment used for creating counterfeit bills.

It was determined that Burress had allegedly been using the counterfeit bills throughout the San Gorgonio Pass Area, authorities said.

Meyer said Burress was wanted by the United States Marshals Service for similar currency crimes and was also being investigated by the United States Secret Service for currency crimes in Orange County, Nevada and Arizona.

Burress was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Tuesday.
