Ceremony Held For Veterans Memorial Park in Coachella

Posted: Updated:
Coachella, CA -

The opening ceremony for the newly renovated Veterans' Memorial Park was held Sunday.  Various speakers, including Louise Granados Rodarte, the 91 year-old sister of Herman Granados, Coachella Valley's first casualty of World War II spoke at the ceremony

Earlier this year, the City Council approved more than $4 million in contracts to revamp the existing Veterans' Memorial Park.

Renovations included engraved tiles in several areas in the park, such as a Veterans' Story Wall, an Honor Wall and an Ultimate Sacrifice Wall, which will commemorate veterans from the area, according to City Engineer Jonathan Hoy.

The park will also feature a new amphitheater, lawn areas for special events, a memorial fountain, a rose garden and a date palm grove.

Congressman Raul Ruiz and representatives for state Sen. Jeff Stone and Assemblyman Eduardo Garcia attended the ceremony.
``It's going to be a beautiful, beautiful tribute,'' Rodarte said.
Other speakers at the event included:
   - Coachella Mayor Steven Hernandez
   - Col. Hal Sellers of the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base
   - Mike Pierson, a Vietnam veteran and general manager of the General Patton Museum
   - Susie del Toro, wife of the late Trino del Toro, a Silver Star Vietnam veteran who was the force behind getting Coachella's Veterans' Park dedicated 28 years ago as the Vietnam Veterans Park.
   - Alfredo Jimenez, Vietnam veteran and commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3699 in Indio.
