Traffic Alert: Closures Scheduled on the 91 Freeway In Riverside this Weekend

Posted: Updated:
Riverside, CA -

The Riverside (91) Freeway in Corona will be partially shut down Friday and Saturday night to enable crews to work on several sections of the east-west artery as part of an ongoing expansion project.

According to the Riverside County Transportation Commission, the eastbound 91 will be closed at the Interstate 15 connector bridge beginning at 11:45 p.m. and will not re-open until 9 a.m. Saturday.

Crews are slated to pour concrete for the new I-15 connector to the eastbound 91, requiring closure of part of the interchange.

Detours will be in effect, taking motorists off I-15 at Magnolia Avenue, where they can circle around the construction zone and re-connect to the eastbound 91, according to transportation officials.

The eastbound 91 will be closed Saturday night, too, as crews complete demolition of the old Maple Street bridge. The freeway will be shut down at Maple beginning at 10:30 p.m. and will not re-open until noon Sunday, according to RCTC. The old bridge has since been replaced with another overcrossing.

The Maple Street detour will force motorists off the 91 and onto Paseo Grande, where they can re-connect to the artery in Corona.

The westbound 91 will remain open, though one to two traffic lanes will be closed during the demolition work as a precaution.

Real-time traffic information will be available during the closures at IE511.org, according to RCTC.

All of the work is part the $1.3 billion ``91 Project Fast Forward.'' Officials said expanded freeway surfaces should be available for use in the first half of next year.

The 91 project began in early 2014 and involves widening the east-west corridor between the Orange County line and Interstate 15, with new traffic lanes and ramps, as well as additional shoulder space and expanded surface streets in the vicinity of the freeway.
